    Predictions of Cockpit Simulator Experimental Outcome Using System Models

    This study involved predicting the outcome of a cockpit simulator experiment where pilots used cockpit displays of traffic information (CDTI) to establish and maintain in-trail spacing behind a lead aircraft during approach. The experiments were run on the NASA Ames Research Center multicab cockpit simulator facility. Prior to the experiments, a mathematical model of the pilot/aircraft/CDTI flight system was developed which included relative in-trail and vertical dynamics between aircraft in the approach string. This model was used to construct a digital simulation of the string dynamics including response to initial position errors. The model was then used to predict the outcome of the in-trail following cockpit simulator experiments. Outcome included performance and sensitivity to different separation criteria. The experimental results were then used to evaluate the model and its prediction accuracy. Lessons learned in this modeling and prediction study are noted

    Comparative genetic resistance to Ascaridia galli infections of 4 different commercial layer-lines

    1. The objective of the study was to compare the establishment and effect of Ascaridia galli infections in 4 different layer-lines. 2. A total of 160 birds comprising 4 different commercial layer-lines, ISA Brown, New Hampshire, Skalborg and a cross of New Hampshire(NH) and Skalborg (Sk), were infected with A. galli eggs. The birds were examined for the presence of parasite eggs and parasites at weeks 3, 6 and 9 post infection (pi). 3. At week 6 pi the chickens of the NH line harboured more larvae compared with the three other lines. The Sk line chickens excreted more A. galli eggs throughout the study compared with the other lines. Female worms in the Sk line were more fecund than the worms in the other lines. Male and female worms recovered from the Sk line at week 9 pi were longer. Male worms recovered from the NH line 6 weeks pi were shorter than male worms from the other lines. Female worms recovered from the NH line were shorter than the female worms from the ISA line and the Sk line. No differences were seen in weight gain among the 4 lines. 4. The results suggest that genetic factors are involved in the establishment and survival of A. galli in the intestine of layers. Further studies are needed to elucidate the genetic mechanisms behind the observed parasitological findings

    In the late 1960\u27s and early 1970\u27s there arose an increased awareness of the ecological relationships of nature to man. Although this relationship has been known for some time and numerous books have been written on the subject, public awareness has been slow in coming. But for some unknown reason man has taken a turn to nature. He is becoming more involved with conservation of nature and appreciative of its aesthetic beauty. With this new awareness there has come a new era of camping, hiking, and riding, to mention only a few activities which man needs or wants to enable him to enjoy his new relationship with nature. As strange as it may seem, one of these new interests is the prairie. In his awareness, man now has become concerned over his management of the prairie and now is looking at its aesthetic beauty, historical dialog, and restoration. If the prairies are to be restored or prairie plants used for landscaping and other commercial uses, there will be a large demand for· seed from forbs which does not exist in sufficient quantity at the present time. This seed source must come from the small relict areas which still possess a gene pool representative of the native prairie. Jenkins points out that in any natural community there are a few dominant species which are very abundant and a large number of species which are more or less rare. In a prairie in Wisconsin, with 240 species present, 12 species were represented by as many individual plants as all the other 228 species combined. It is these 228 species, the majority of which are forbs, that this thesis is concerned about. Extensive research has been done on the grasses of the prairie, and these grasses can be established with relative ease compared to the forbs. Essentially no research has been done with forbs in· comparison to prairie grasses. The objectives of this thesis are twofold: (1) to determine the germination potential of several native prairie forbs, and (2) to determine the vegetative propagation potential of several native prairie forbs

    After a momentous decade of live coding activities, this paper seeks to explore the practice with the aim of situating it in the history of contemporary arts and music. The article introduces several key points of investigation in live coding research and discusses some examples of how live coding practitioners engage with these points in their system design and performances. In the light of the extremely diverse manifestations of live coding activities, the problem of defining the practice is discussed, and the question raised whether live coding will actually be necessary as an independent category

    Inelastic fingerprints of hydrogen contamination in atomic gold wire systems

    We present series of first-principles calculations for both pure and hydrogen contaminated gold wire systems in order to investigate how such impurities can be detected. We show how a single H atom or a single H2 molecule in an atomic gold wire will affect forces and Au-Au atom distances under elongation. We further determine the corresponding evolution of the low-bias conductance as well as the inelastic contributions from vibrations. Our results indicate that the conductance of gold wires is only slightly reduced from the conductance quantum G0=2e^2/h by the presence of a single hydrogen impurity, hence making it difficult to use the conductance itself to distinguish between various configurations. On the other hand, our calculations of the inelastic signals predict significant differences between pure and hydrogen contaminated wires, and, importantly, between atomic and molecular forms of the impurity. A detailed characterization of gold wires with a hydrogen impurity should therefore be possible from the strain dependence of the inelastic signals in the conductance.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, Contribution to ICN+T2006, Basel, Switzerland, July-August 200
